Dress Code

Sobesky’s dress code is given to parents and students at the student’s intake conference, or at registration for returning students.

It is the responsibility of every staff member to (a) know the dress code, (b) help students be aware of the limitations of the dress code, and (c) enforce the code in a way that helps to educate students about the need for a dress code and how it limits their attire while at school. Staff who encounter students who are in violation of the dress code should report the issue to the student’s homeroom teacher as a means of communicating that information to the support team. Parental/Student Agreement for Dress Code

Board Policy JICA states, “The appearance or dress of student shall not be disruptive to the educational process or constitute a health or safety hazard.” Students are expected to dress in an appropriate manner that does not create a disruption to the therapeutic and educational program. The following dress code provides guidelines for parents and students. Parents will be contacted and students may be required to return home to change clothing or wear alternative clothing (from the school) if their apparel is not appropriate.

  • Hats, hoods, beanies, caps and bandanas cannot be worn inside the building.
    • Hats, gloves, sunglasses and jackets will be worn outside only.
    • Even clothes and hats worn outside the building must not have words or pictures related to sex, drugs, alcohol or tobacco, weapons or anything that advocates violence.
  • No clothing may be worn with pictures of drugs, alcohol or tobacco, or words that promote the use of drugs alcohol or tobacco.
  • No clothing may be worn with pictures or words that show or promote sex, violence or gang-related activity.
  • Underwear must be covered at all times. Sagging of pants is not allowed.
  • Bodies must be covered so as to not show cleavage or belly skin. Skirts and shorts may be no shorter than mid-thigh, including when the student sits or bends over.
  • No tank tops, spaghetti straps, tube tops, halter tops, crop tops or see-through tops are allowed.
  • No sleeveless athletic shirts (such as basketball jerseys) can be worn unless an appropriate shirt is worn underneath.
  • Sleeveless shirts and blouses are allowed as long as the shoulders and sides are covered.
  • No spikes are allowed on clothing or person.
  • No chains or dog collars may be worn.
  • Pajamas, slippers and other loungewear are not allowed.
  • Piercing with studs, barbells or hoops are allowed as long as they do not cause a safety hazard.
  • No trench coats, dusters or any clothing may be worn that suggest gang membership or membership in a secret society.
  • Belts must be tucked into belt loops.
  • Parents are encouraged to insist that adequate clothing be worn during the winter. All students will have outside breaks except on the very coldest and wettest of days.
  • Sobesky Academy administration will enforce a dress code that assures the safety and well-being of all students.
